One of the favorite activities of an average girl is to sit comfortably on the sofa, make her nails, watch the photos of the models in fashion magazines and dream that one day her own photos will be placed on the pages of this beautiful advertisement. The life of these gorgeous women reminds a fairy-tale – plenty of admirers, interesting photo sessions, travels, designer cloths…If you are among those who share this opinion I want to disappoint you – it is not that sweet and easy, modeling is a severe business, and if you are seriously planning to get involved in it you’d better prepare for the hardships on your way.
Modeling is not only about stunning body and attractive face. It is a hard work to perform, as you have to smile on the command, put different expressions on your face, not be shy to reveal your emotions in front of the strangers. This profession requires from you an artistic talent, so if you are not sure you possess it, attend some special courses beforehand.
Another illusion many girls have when thinking of modeling is that it is a glamorous business of wearing nice cloths and posing for cameras an hour or two. However, I advise you to part with this illusion. Making a good photo may take you hours of posing and standing frozen in inconvenient postures. Besides, the best shots are usually taken in the natural light of sunrise, so get ready to wake up very early in the mornings. Moreover, you will have to sit long hours while the stylists will work at your image and do whatever they want with your appearance. Note also, that nobody will ask you whether you like your make-up or hair style or not. They may even cut your hair short for the sake of a good pic.
If you have not changed your mind yet about entering this glorious profession, let’s proceed with the list of hardships you will face. Becoming a model is a tough task to perform. You may visit hundreds of agencies and listen to hundreds of refusal before finding the place to work in. It is better if you are represented by a respectable modeling agent. And, the most important step you should take is to hire the photographer and make your perfect modeling portfolio. Portfolio is your chance to produce strong impression on the agency, so you should devote most of your energy to fill it with your best pictures. As for the number of the photos, there is no need to use as much as you can – it is not the quantity, but quality which is your target aim. For a beginner about 6-12 photos will be enough. Note, that you may also include black and white pictures in your portfolio if you think that this mode is favorable for you. You may include the photos in lingerie as well, but make sure that the sex appeal exposed on them is not so obvious; otherwise your portfolio will be more suitable for another sphere of photo industry, where no designer or any other dresses are needed.
I told you about all these difficulties without the intention to change your mind; I just want you to understand the essence of the modeling business. It looks more like devotion and commitment than a glamorous way of life.
